The Martin Luther King Mitzvah

Mathew Tekulsky's novel is a timeless story of two kids who defy the odds, unite a town, and make a brave stand against discrimination.

Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute and portrait with his book.

In my book, about MLK, my characters attend his speech called “Beyond Vietnam,” which was given one year to the day before he was assassinated, April 4, 1967. Here I have my first edition of his book WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE: CHAOS OR COMMUNITY, along with the original business card that he gave out with the book to special people. It reads: WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE AUTHOR.

To show you how publishing works, these blurbs are from the only editors that TURNED DOWN my book so far:
Lee Boudreaux of Lee Boudreaux Books:
“Many thanks for giving me the chance to consider ME AND SALLY AND MARTIN LUTHER KING. This is such a charming, heartwarming novel. You capture Adam’s voice wonderfully, allowing the reader to see the world through his young eyes, but never verging into the realm of sentimentality.”
Will Wolfslau of Tim Duggan Books:
“It’s an inspiring story, with many well-observed details of the era.”
Andrea Pinkney of Scholastic:
“It’s a very intriguing premise.”
Kelly Delaney of Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers:
“It’s a sweet story.”

The book has reached the review status at an unnamed major publisher. All it takes is one “yes,” as they say, but I never thought this one would be so difficult to sell.

Me and Tunnel View and the 2016 Yosemite Sierra Visitors Guide

Wow, it’s good to have friends like James Lee Stern, who photographed me with my Tunnel View photo, just published in the 2016 Yosemite Sierra Visitors Guide. Thanks to Rhonda Salisbury of the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau and Lisa Baker of the Sierra Star for their support of my photography. Yosemite is my favorite place in the whole wide world. IMG_5733mathew_tekulsky_ysvb_visitors_guide_2016_peets_jim_stern_photo_e_raw IMG_5737mathew_tekulsky_ysvb_visitors_guide_2016_peets_jim_stern_photo_e_raw_crop IMG_5741mathew_tekulsky_ysvb_visitors_guide_2016_peets_jim_stern_photo_e_raw IMG_8355TEKULSKY_TUNNEL_VIEW

Filling up the hummingbird feeder for Woman’s World

The nice folks at Woman’s World magazine asked for a photograph of me pouring sugar water into my hummingbird feeder, so I got out there today and did just that. They also asked for a hummingbird photo as well. The article should be very nice, by Kristina Mastrocola of Woman’s World.IMG_7044bayliss_mathew_tekulsky_filling_hummingbird_feeder_TEKULSKY

Woman’s World magazine interviewed me

They are doing an article about hummingbird gardening and butterfly gardening. I had a nice chat today with writer Kristina Mastrocola of Woman’s World and it brought back memories of working on these books. She asked some good questions about how to set up gardens for the hummingbirds and butterflies and we also talked about photography. The article will appear around May 12 and it will be widely available on newsstands. I’m looking forward to it. I was describing to Kristina the wide-brimmed hat I wear to hide me from the hummingbirds, and I decided to send her this photo to show what it’s like. That’s me at my garden in Adamant, VT. IMG_1080adamant_mathew_tekulsky_camera_hummingbird_feeder_stickers_180_e
