Fire Paramedic Larry Redden of Los Angeles Fire Department Station 19, Brentwood, poses in his truck yesterday with my new book Backyard Bird Photography. Back in February, this fire truck stood in front of my house for a few hours as the fire department protected the area while the DWP arrived to fix an underground fire in the power cables. The fire department guys asked to see my bird photographs as we waited. I showed them a portfolio. Yesterday, Larry asked how the book was going, as we were both at the Mandeville Canyon Evacuation Drill (for possible fires) at Paul Revere Middle School. I said, “I have the book right here,” and pulled it out of my pack. Larry was so nice to pose for me. These are the true heroes.
I just pre-ordered a few copies of the book from Sam’s Club. This might be a good place to buy books, especially since they bought out the first printing of mine.
My advance copies arrived on my doorstep two days ago. This photograph was taken moments after I opened the box. It is always a surreal moment when an author sees the first printed copies of his work. In this case, I lucked out. I’m in my garden, where most of the photographs in the book were taken. This book will make a nice catalogue for my exhibition at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute January 13 through March 8, 2015.
I’ve been informed that the first printing of my book BACKYARD BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY has been purchased by a large retailer, and the book is going back to press even before the official publication date in order to satisfy the demand from other retailers. This means August 5 is now the official publication date.
